Tommy Who!
The Deutsches Theater München presents
TOMMY WHO!
A Tribute to The Who
ROCK FOR A GOOD CAUSE
The Munich-based band TOMMY WHO! was founded in 2019 and will perform the songs of the famous rock opera Tommy by The Who as well as further hits by the British cult band. After the first concert with the currently allowed 200 visitors was sold out, there is now an additional show.
THE BAND THAT MADE MUSIC HISTORY
With their performance at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969, The Who went down in music history. A couple of weeks before that show they had published their concept album Tommy – one of the first and most influential rock operas. For the 20th anniversary of that album, The Who went on a spectacular tour in 1989. At one of these concerts, several famous guests joined them on stage, among them Elton John, Phil Collins and Billy Idol.
TOMMY WHO!
Inspired by that amazing concert and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the album Tommy, the Munich-based tribute band TOMMY WHO! was founded, and will reenact the 1989-concert almost par for par. Additionally, you can look forward to the second half of the concert which will feature a „Best of The Who“.
BACKGROUND
The story of Tommy was inpired by the teachings of the Indian guru Meher Baba and was adapted for film in 1975 with Tina Turner and Elton John in guest roles as well as for musical theatre and ballet. Tommy is the story of Tommy Walker, who turns blind, deaf and mute in his childhood when he witnesses his father (thought to be dead) kill his mother’s new husband. From there on, Tommy lives isolated in his own world („Amazing Journey“). He discovers his talent for playing pinball and becomes world champion. He is finally healed („Go to the Mirror“, „Smash the Mirror“) and is viewed as a Messiah („Sensation“, „Miracle Cure“). But his followers soon turn their backs on him („We’re Not Gonna Take It“).
