UTE LEMPER
RENDEZVOUS WITH MARLENE
A great artist
Ute Lemper is one of the most internationally successful stars of the theatre and musical scene that Germany has produced. She has been celebrated by audiences and critics in London and on Broadway in New York. She is a role model for countless young actresses. Her programme, with which she can now be experienced on our stage, is dedicated to one of her great idols. We are looking forward to unforgettable evenings with a great artist.
“I breathe my life into her character”
At the age of 24, Ute Lemper was already celebrated as the “new Marlene Dietrich”. Back then, in 1987, she played Sally Bowles in the European revival of “Cabaret”. Nevertheless, today’s world star, who regularly performs in venues such as La Scala in Milan, the Sydney Opera House or on Broadway in New York, did not consider the comparison with the great diva Marlene Dietrich appropriate: “In a letter to Marlene I apologised for this and expressed my admiration for her, whereupon she called me,” Ute Lemper reports. For three hours, the two show ladies talked about their lives, their work, their love for Rainer Maria Rilke and their search for home. 30 years later, this telephone conversation forms the basis for a rendezvous with Marlene – Lemper’s homage to the former icon. With several of Marlene Dietrich’s immortal songs, the musical star explores the unique career of the film diva. “I tell what is important to me about her and breathe my life into her character. It’s a fusion of her and me.“
