The story of resistance
“You have to have a hard spirit and a soft heart,” wrote Sophie Scholl in a letter shortly before her arrest. Together with her brother, she was part of the White Rose, one of the most famous German resistance groups, which appealed to the reason and humanity of the population with leaflets during the Nazi era. The musical The White Rose celebrates its Munich premiere in July.
For freedom
The clarity and determination with which the Scholl siblings and their fellow campaigners Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst and Prof. Kurt Huber fought against the Nazi regime developed over a long period of time. In the play, we first get to know Hans and Sophie as convinced members of the Hitler Youth and experience harassment, injustice, cruelty and arbitrariness together with them. We understand their initial enthusiasm as well as their doubts and their turning away from the regime. We share in the excitement of the production and distribution of the leaflets, their arrest and even their sentencing.
More topical than ever
The White Rose is not only a play about responsibility and the courage to rethink, but also about growing up. About first love, discovering one’s own personality and searching for and finding one’s own path in life in a dark time in our history. Today, when more and more people are deciding to confront the problems of our world with simple slogans instead of really wanting to solve them, Die Weiße Rose reminds us of the responsibility of each individual for justice and humanity in our society.
