Die Weisse Rose
Deutsches Theater München presents an event organized by Festspielhaus Füssen GmbH
An outstanding musical
“You have to have a strong spirit and a soft heart,” Sophie Scholl wrote in a letter shortly before her arrest. Together with her brother, she was part of the White Rose resistance movement during the Nazi era. Vera Bolten (book, direction) and Alex Melcher (book, music) have created a gripping musical based on the story of this resistance movement, which premiered in Munich on our stage in 2025. It went on to win a total of seven German Musical Theater Awards. Now it returns to the place where the story originated.
For freedom
The clarity and determination with which the Scholl siblings and their comrades Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, and Prof. Kurt Huber fought against the Nazi regime developed over a long period of time. In the play, we first get to know Hans and Sophie as staunch members of the Hitler Youth and experience harassment, injustice, cruelty, and arbitrariness alongside them. We understand both their initial enthusiasm and their doubts and eventual rejection of the regime. We share their excitement as they produce and distribute leaflets, and follow their arrest and conviction.
More relevant than ever
The White Rose is not only a play about responsibility and the courage to rethink, but also about growing up. About first love, discovering one’s own personality, and searching for and finding one’s own path in life during a dark period of our history. Today, when more and more people are choosing to address the problems of our world with simple slogans instead of really wanting to solve them, The White Rose reminds us of each individual’s responsibility for justice and humanity in our society.
