Sophie Wegener – Encontros e despedidas
Deutsches Theater München is presenting
Of Encounters and Farewells
The German-French singer Sophie Wegener has devoted herself entirely to bossa nova, the music that took the world by storm from Brazil in the late 1950s and that, in a way, sounds more cosmopolitan than almost any other. Whether in New York, Tokyo, or Paris: It has fans everywhere, and people associate it with a certain lighthearted, slightly melancholic attitude toward life. That’s also what her new program, *Encontros e despedidas*—meaning “Encounters and Farewells”—is all about.
A Musical Journey with Bossa Nova
With deeply emotional, sometimes cheerful and relaxed, sometimes bittersweet compositions by Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and Chico Buarque, she embarks on a journey back to her musical roots. She is accompanied by her trusted companions: pianist Tizian Jost and bassist Matthias Engelhardt are also part of her band “Zona Sul,” with which she has recorded three albums.
Space for the Band
As a trio, they’re reuniting today to celebrate the music that inspires them so deeply. And even though Sophie Wegener takes center stage as the vocalist, there’s always plenty of room for her virtuoso accompanists to thrill the audience with numerous solos.
