John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums: we’re talking about the Modern Jazz Quartet. The ensemble had a major influence on modern jazz and blended it with elements of classical music. Its sound is characterized by elegant, clear arrangements, understated ensemble playing, and a chamber-music-like quality. Christian Elsässer, Tim Collins, and Roland Spiegel introduce the Modern Jazz Quartet.
