World bestseller as a rousing musical

The Medicus is a proverbial success story. The novel by Noah Gordon has sold eight million copies in Germany alone. The film version attracted more than three million moviegoers and seven million TV viewers. The musical of the same name with music by Iván Macías and lyrics by Félix Amador is now continuing this success story. It has already won eleven BroadwayWorld Audience Awards – including “Best Musical. After celebrated guest performances in Spain and the Czech Republic, it is now celebrating its German premiere here.

The secrets of medieval medicine

The story takes place in the 11th century. Rob Cole becomes an orphan and is henceforth on his own. He possesses an unusual gift: he can predict death by merely touching a person. A quack who travels the country with his primitive healing methods takes him in and initiates him into his business. But Rob is curious, he wants to actually help people instead of pulling money out of their noses.

At 19, he sets off to Isfahan to meet the famous medic Avicenna. He was told that he was the best doctor of all time and that you can only study medicine properly with him. On his grueling journey, he meets the love of his life, Mary. When he arrives in Isfahan, he has to overcome the most important hurdle: He must pretend to be Jewish, otherwise he will not be allowed to study there. Rob quickly becomes a master student of the Medicus, but the plague, a war and the despotic Shah continuously threaten his life.

The music of Iván Macías has been praised by critics as one of the most important musical compositions – classical and contemporary at the same time, with moments of outstanding beauty. Macías is considered one of the best composers and conductors of his generation. With Der Medicus – Das Musical, the team of authors has succeeded in combining all the components of a musical drama into a unique, compact and emotionally impressive whole. Noah Gordon, who will die in 2021, also expressed his enthusiasm: “I hear my book! The emotion of my novel has been brought to the stage with this wonderful music!”
