WORLD LITERATURE AS A DRAMATIC MUSICAL
With his 1886 novella “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson created what is probably the most famous description of the doppelganger motif in world literature. And provided the template for more than 30 film adaptations. The dramatic musical Jekyll & Hyde by composer Frank Wildhorn and author Leslie Bricusse will now conquer our stage in a new German-language production next year. Andreas Gergen is responsible for the direction.
THE ACT
The physician Dr. Henry Jekyll has made it his life’s work to research the separation of good and evil in man. For moral reasons, his colleagues forbid him to perform the necessary experiments on humans. So Dr. Jekyll makes himself his own guinea pig and puts his life fatally at risk. He comes to ever deeper knowledge, but at the same time loses control over himself. His evil alter ego (Edward Hyde) gains the upper hand over his life. Jekyll’s fiancée Lisa supports him to the best of her ability in his research, but she cannot stop her lover’s terrible transformation.
Edward Hyde is a criminal in the disreputable and criminal London underground. He is a cruel sadist, numerous corpses pave his way. Dr. Jekyll realizes what kind of monster he becomes at times and tries with all means to fight against it. In the end, however, the evil in him in the form of Hyde proves to be the stronger. When Jekyll realizes at his own wedding that in the form of Hyde he would also be able to kill his beloved Lisa, the helpless explorer recognizes in his own death the last way out of the hopeless situation.
