DOK.fest 2024
WE ROLL OUT THE RED (MOVIE) CARPET AGAIN
It has become a small tradition that we transform our theater into a large cinema hall once a year. And this spring, we are once again rolling out the red (film) carpet for DOK.fest München. On May 1, we present the first big premiere, which will be followed by further films until May 5. And of course, the legendary DOK.party in our beautiful Silbersaal is not to be missed. It will take place there on May 4 from 9.30 pm. You can find all the information here.
Focus on democracy
At the 39th edition of DOK.fest München, which is taking place at various locations in Munich up to and including May 12, a total of 109 films from 51 countries will be shown. This year’s festival has a special focus on the strongly divergent forces within European democracies. “The great value of democracy lies in its ability to represent the interests of many population groups and enable them to flourish, including the anti-democratic activities of its enemies. A dilemma: these forces are growing and using this systematic openness to undermine the foundations of democracy,” says Festival Director Daniel Sponsel. Together with our managing director Thomas Linsmayer and numerous other guests, he will traditionally open the festival in our theater on May 1st.
In addition to the grand opening of the 39th DOK.fest on May 1, we will be showing eight further German premieres:
DISCO FOX
Germany 2023, Carmen Kirchweger, 90 min., OmeU
Six young women defy gravity and open up new climbing routes on the steep inclines of Greenland’s mountains. They prepare fervently for their expedition and test their limits. “Somewhere in the middle of nowhere” takes on a different meaning when life hangs in the balance hundreds of metres above the ground – dependent on ropes, physical strength and decision-making skills. A film about strength and confronting danger.

2UNBREAKABLE
Germany 2023, Maike Conway, 90 min., OmeU
Breakdancing is about more than dancing; it is an identity and an attitude that allows breakers to face life’s challenges with confidence. Injuries become an opportunity to develop further. We follow Joanna and Serhat as they take part in their battles for Olympic qualification. The two share similar backgrounds and are pursuing a future in breakdancing. An emboldening, moving film.

DORIS DÖRRIE – DIE FLANEUSE
Germany 2023, Sabine Lidl, 64 Min., OV, Dt.
“Lightness is hard work,” says Doris Dörrie, whose successful comedies often pose questions of identity. Cleverly assembled, with extracts from her biggest film hits and early interviews as well as insights into writing seminars and comments from those who know her, Sabine Lidl’s film shows Dörrie’s complexity – and the relationship between acting and writing, cooking and culture, eating and storytelling.

For the young people who train in Germany’s numerous football clubs, the sport is a grounding influence and gives them a sense of group and team spirit. It doesn’t matter where they come from or what their body type is. 13 filmmakers from HFF Munich visited 11 teams that are the embodiment of true integration, inclusion, diversity and, last but not least, passion.

JOANA MALLWITZ – MOMENTUM
Germany 2024, Günter Atteln, 88 min., OmeU
Joana Mallwitz views music scores like other people view films. Music is her life and it can only be managed through meticulous organisation: guest appearances across Europe, family, a permanent position as a principal conductor. Conveying her musical vision with the greatest perfection demands everything of her. A portrait of an exceptional artist.

MISTY – THE ERROLL GARNER STORY
Switzerland, Germany, France 2023, Georges Gachot, 93 min., OmeU
Jazz pianist Erroll Garner grew up in Pittsburgh in the 1920s as the youngest of six children. He taught himself the piano from an early age. He never learned to read music but became famous for his virtuoso improvisations. The private life of this seemingly perpetually joyful musician was kept hidden, even from his family. MISTY – THE ERROLL GARNER STORY reveals the light and dark sides of this quiet genius.
