A fight for faith and love
Die Päpstin – Das Musical (Pope Joan – The Musical) after the eponymous novel by Donna W. Cross is coming to our stage as a lavish new production by Benjamin Sahler. It’s the captivating story of the progressive Johanna (Joan), who disguises as a man in the 9th century to receive an education – and finally lands on the papal throne due to her intelligence and perseverance.
The story of a remarkable woman
Johanna is born in 814, an exceptionally intelligent girl who learns how to read and write against the will of her father. Later, she disguises as a man – monk Johannes Anglicus – and finally arrives in Rome, where she becomes the Pope’s personal doctor. The Pope dies and the Roman people vote for Johanna as his successor. But her one true love is in Rome, too. A merciless fight for faith and passion ensues, and nobady can know who she really is.
