Boncin’ in Bubbleverse
Deutsche Theater München is hosting
A soulful evening with the musicians of Max Mutzke
What is soul? A rousing style of music, say some. An overwhelming feeling, claim others. It is what makes us unique, according to English dictionaries. Each of these definitions applies to the Matti Klein Soul Trio, but the latter describes the essence of the trio particularly well. Here, three soulmates have come together in the name of groove, striking out on their own path beyond the well-trodden trails of Hammond organ trios.
Special sound
At the heart of the sound are the warm Wurlitzer tones of bandleader Matti Klein, who has already graced the most important jazz clubs in New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris with the funk jazz formation Mo’ Blow and Brazilian yacht pop heavyweight Ed Motta. The comforting deep tones of a 1973 Fender Rhodes piano bass are a unique feature of the group, as is the precise use of sound effects by tenor saxophonist and bass clarinetist Lars Dieterich. The elastic playing of drummer André Seidel ensures that the trio’s other specialty, its uncomplicated preference for odd meters, is literally not taken amiss. Prominent soul gourmets such as singer Max Mutzke swear by the trio and regularly hire them as their live band.
“It grooves like crazy”
All these qualities also define Bouncin’ in Bubbleverse, the trio’s third album of the same name. On the recording, Klein & Co. process their rich touring experiences and long-lasting reflections on society. “It grooves tremendously,” judges Deutschlandfunk, while the British magazine Jazzwise states: “A new, smoking’ hot twist on the much-loved organ trio format. They deserve to be huge everywhere!”
