Amadeus
Deutsches Theater München is staging a production by Opera Incognita GbR
Opulent musical theater spectacle
More than 45 years ago, Paul Shaffer’s play AMADEUS celebrated its premiere and has since been adapted numerous times, not only for the stage. The film adaptation won eight Oscars. Opera Incognita is now bringing the play to our Silbersaal stage for the first time as an opulent musical theater spectacle with an acting ensemble, choir, and music combo.
From the perspective of his adversary
In his fictional account of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Shaffer employs the artistic device of recounting the composer’s final years in Vienna from the perspective of his adversary, Antonio Salieri. Full of bitterness, the merely moderately talented Italian composer is forced to acknowledge Mozart’s unparalleled artistic superiority. At first, he tries to bring Mozart down through intrigue, even enlisting the help of Mozart’s young wife Constanze. Obsessed with envy and resentment, Salieri finally sees only one way out: he must poison Mozart.
Man against God
For Salieri, fighting Mozart represents his struggle against a God he considers unjust, who has endowed a childish fool with such great talent. He himself, on the other hand, has been forced to recognize Mozart’s divine manifestation from his own mediocrity.
